Yesterday I finally picked up a polarizing lens filter for my Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 lens.  I'm looking forward to a couple of sunny days to take it out for a test drive!  If everything goes well I should get a lot of use out of it this summer.  :)

My next major purchase will be a new lens for my Canon T1i...  I've been looking at the Canon EF 70-200 f/4 IS.

Oh, an afterthought, I should mention what the filter is...  It is a Sigma 77mm DG Wide C-PL.

Never mind the ability to generate renewable energy... up close these things are impressive.  I wish more of them dotted the landscape honestly.

I spent about an hour walking around and talking with a few folks at Rotary Park in New Glasgow.  Ofcourse, with camera in tow.  A few people fishing in the East River at the park were kind enough to let me hover around them and take some pictures.  In the highly unlikely situation any of them are reading this thanks folks!

Sat, 16 May 2009 14:01:43 -0700 Let the photo's begin... http://www.mikekellock.com/let-the-photos-begin http://www.mikekellock.com/let-the-photos-begin Honestly, I am new to the world of DSLR's and photography so I have ALOT to learn.  The world of point-and-shoot has been left behind.  I was out early this morning to take a couple of pictures but unfortunately not many of the shots turned out all that well.  I really did expect this.  I was far too busy playing with settings and forgetting to change settings to have anything turn out.  All the same it was fun...  I am looking forward to the warmer weather so I can go off on some hikes to get some pictures of some of the places I have previously visited.  Anyhow, let me show a few of the pictures I took today.

These are both on Greenhill, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.  I promise there will be more pictures in the future.

Sun, 03 May 2009 10:23:56 -0700 Camera Excitement Builds! http://www.mikekellock.com/camera-excitement-builds http://www.mikekellock.com/camera-excitement-builds I spent the last couple of days reviewing tons of different lenses that I could buy for my Canon EOS Rebel T1i.  I am very comfortable with my choice of camera considering this is my first step into the world of DSLR's but I am under no illusion that the lens that will ship with my camera will essentially be crap.  I believe I read on one website that Canon valued the lens at approximately $100 CDN.  The reviews were not very favourable so I figured I should look around for something that will generally serve me well.  I must admit that I did not expect camera lenses to be quite so complex as I started my research.  I still have tons to learn obviously but after many reviews (and looking at pictures taken with certain lenses on Flickr) I have come to the conclusion that the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM would be the best possible lens for my camera.

I am looking forward to taking all this stuff out for a test drive in the near future.  You'll likely be the first to know...

Fri, 01 May 2009 12:02:00 -0700 My poor neglected blog... http://www.mikekellock.com/my-poor-neglected-blog http://www.mikekellock.com/my-poor-neglected-blog

I really do neglect my blog... sorry.

I have just been so preoccupied with either work or other things.  I am working on a project which I hope to have launched by the end of May which has eaten up much of my free time.  I'll talk about it a bit more as I get closer to launching it.  It should be fun though and I am really looking forward to seeing what it evolves into.

For those who do follow my twitter updates or know me well I have recently ordered a new DSLR that I can't wait to actually have in my hands.  I should have it early next week and I would expect you will be bombarded with photos and videos soon thereafter.  Here is a picture of the Canon EOS Rebel T1i.

Tue, 31 Mar 2009 12:55:42 -0700 Punta Cana Vacation http://www.mikekellock.com/punta-cana-vacation http://www.mikekellock.com/punta-cana-vacation Well, I must say that overall I had a really great trip to the Dominican Republic.  I was looking for a relaxing vacation in the sun with minimal worries and I got just that.  Now, there were issues that did come up especially around my arrival and departure from the Dominican but they were sorted out with a bit of persistence and patience.  Here is a little review of my week starting at my arrival in Punta Cana.

Getting off the plane and feeling humidity and warmth (30 Celsius) hit you after the winter we have experienced here in eastern Canada was enough to bring a smile to my face.  As I walked down from the plane we were more or less "herded" to the arrival "hut" (which I guess I should refer to the terminal).  As we lined up and made our way through customs I broke out laughing when I noticed that the incredibly large fans on the ceiling were actually called "Big Ass Fans".  I pointed this out to a couple of people around me and before long almost everyone was looking up and getting a chuckle.  I eventually made it to the luggage carousel and was pleased to see my bag actually made it.  Even if it hadn't I made sure I had my shorts, t-shirt and sandals stored in my carry-on bag.  Navigating the airport was made really easy and I eventually found the bus that would take me to my resort.

The bus ride to the resort was a real eye opener.  Looking out the window and seeing the "homes" that some of the people live in reminded me of how fortunate I am.  I was glad it wasn't hidden away from travelers.  In one particular area the garbage on the side of the road was absolutely mindboggling and the gasp from everyone on the bus was memorable.  Shortly afterward we went through a check point for the resort with armed guards and within five minutes of that we were looking at a beautiful fountain that announced our arrival at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort.  This place is quite huge and there was a lot of confusion as to where everyone was getting off.  We circled around the different hotels that make up the resort dropping people off and when it was finally my turn my luggage had gone missing as well as one other couples.  I wasn't exactly surprised by this because like I said there was little organisation to what was happening at each of the previous stops.  We ended up having to circle back to all the other places and eventually I did find my bag after around 2hrs.  There were many hundreds of people arriving at the same time so as you can imagine...  it was almost like trying to find a needle in a haystack.  All the employees were genuinely concerned about trying to find it so I was at least happy with that.  Some sort of luggage detection gadget would have been most helpful! ;-P

Anyhow...  the next adventure was registration which while painless was extrodinarily slow.  And I mean slow.  I was patient and just waited it out but more than a couple of people absolutely lost their mind.  I was happy to eventually to the counter and get registered and get my "magic braclet".  Unfortunately, my room wouldn't be ready for a few hours so I took off to change (I was so happy I had kept a change of clothes in my carry-on bag) and eat.  After that I went to the poolside bar with a couple of other people from my flight to wait until our rooms were ready.

The room I was in was nice.  My fire alarm would sound every time I took a shower for some reason which made me laugh.  It was easy enough to fix though...  I just removed it from the ceiling when I wanted to take a shower and put it under a pillow.

The beach was amazing... and I mean that.  Beach in both directions for as far a you could see.  This and the weather is what I came for and fortunately the weather would cooperate all week.

Overall, it was a relaxing week with great weather.

Thu, 19 Mar 2009 15:21:52 -0700 Vacation http://www.mikekellock.com/vacation-19 http://www.mikekellock.com/vacation-19 Just one... more... shift and I am officially on vacation.  After what has been a particularly long winter I am off to the Dominican Republic for a week of of hopefully mostly sun filled days.  I have never been to an "all inclusive" so it should be an interesting experience.  I don't expect it to be something I will want to do every year since but it is hard to pass judgment until you actually go experience something.  I find Adventure Travel much more appealing but to be honest after the last couple of months I'll take any break.  Speaking of Adventure Travel...  I have been quite impressed by the offerings of BikeHike.com and I am hoping to take one of their trips to South America in the near future (meaning this year).

Something else I am looking forward to is going by myself.  It is always interesting to see the reaction of people when they hear you are traveling alone.  How would you react?

One of my best travel memories to date was a stop I made in Hawaii on my way home from Australia approximately 13 years ago.  Ofcourse, I was travelling by myself and I intentionally made absolutely no plans.  I stepped off the Qantas flight on Oahu... met a girl from Australia that was on her way home as well (from Canada).  We ended up sharing a cab to a Hostel that someone gave me a brochure to outside the airport.  I then proceeded to have a blast meeting people from around the world and exploring Hawaii.

Anyhow... time to go to work that last shift before vacation this weekend!
